I love 3D printing and all the fun things that I can do with it. I’ve found a ton of helpful household DIY projects on different pages, but after my automatic garbage can lid broke, I wanted to try something different. As I waited for a replacement lid to be delivered, I remembered a program I had used in the past to design a few other prints. I jumped back into Tinkercad to see what I might be able to do.<\/p>\n

All I needed was a small handle to screw into the lid of my trash bin. That way, I could easily pop it open, since it wasn’t really designed with that in mind. A little later, after some dragging and dropping and refining, I was ready to start printing something of my very own. You can, too.<\/p>\n

I thought 3D scanning was complicated, then my iPhone proved me wrong.<\/p>\n

I remember when I was in high school, we had access to AutoCAD, and it was incredibly cool to work on building something and bringing it to life. Unfortunately for me, high school ended well over a decade ago, and most of what I thought I might have remembered about using AutoCAD has long since been forgotten. Tinkercad, on the other hand, is incredibly user-friendly and intuitive, giving me a chance to shake off the rust and get to building. Create, export it as an .STL file, run it through a Slicer like Cura, and you can print whatever you’ve created.<\/p>\n

Tinkercad is simple enough to use. There are plenty of shapes that users can throw together to create something, or you can comb through community settings to see if there is anything that could benefit you. In the past, I’ve used the program to create everything from speedometer holders for motorcycles to simple hooks for holding utensils in the kitchen. It’s an incredibly intuitive piece of software, especially for those who may not be entirely familiar with the idea of 3D modeling.<\/p>\n

As a curious mind, there are times when I’d rather try to make something of my own. A garbage can handle shouldn’t have been too hard, considering some of the other projects that I’d made in the past. But when I launched Tinkercad for the first time in, apparently, 5 years, all of my old projects were still there. Motorcycle parts that I shaved down after printing, the aforementioned kitchen hooks, and everything else were just hanging out in here. For a free project, I would have expected that those projects would have been long gone, but apparently not.<\/p>\n

Tinkercad is a part of the Autodesk family, so as long as your Autodesk account is in good standing, you shouldn’t have to worry about your projects randomly disappearing. However, I may have been lucky, seeing as Autodesk has updated its data retention policies and could potentially delete inactive accounts if they don’t log in for a while. Just make sure you’re logging in and making new projects, and you’ll never have to worry, I guess. If you’ve used Tinkercad before, be sure to check your emails for any account notifications.<\/p>\n

I’m a big fan of learning new things, from the basics of networking and how different cables work tohow to host my own servers for my favorite games. Tinkercad makes something as terrifying as 3D modeling seem incredibly simple and easy to do. There’s still a bit of a learning curve here, especially if you want things to look nice once they’ve been modeled and printed, but the basics are explained incredibly well. The best part is, is that they don’t cost a cent, and you can revisit them at any time. Interested users can also test Codeblocks to design 3D objects with something like Scratch, or test and simulate circuit boards for Arduino projects, too.<\/p>\n

Pair that with the large community of creators on YouTube or in forums, and you’ve got yourself a community of like-minded folks who are all eager to help each other out. Then, when you’re finally ready to make the leap into bigger programs like AutoCAD, you’ll hopefully feel ready to tackle what they have to offer. There’s also a Tinkercad app available on Android and iOS devices that offers incredible support for Apple Pencil, allowing users to create on the go.<\/p>\n

While Tinkercad is amazing for those who have never done anything with 3D modeling before. That said, it may be more of a hindrance than a help for those who have completed more complex projects in the past. Almost everything that Tinkercad has to offer is basic geometry, like squares and cylinders. You can do some basic bends and tweaks of that sort, but if you’re hoping to design something intricate? You may need to try another browser-based or standalone modeler.<\/p>\n

Tinkercad gives users enough to work with to create something that’s at least aesthetically pleasing, even if it’s something as simple as smoothing out the curves of a handle. But for anything that requires technical depth and minuscule tweaks, this isn’t the program for you. It also can’t help you screw something on evenly, as I’m now seeing from the pictures attached.<\/p>\n

If you’ve had even the slightest interest in learning to 3D model, Tinkercad is the program I would recommend to everyone. It’s incredibly user-friendly, and if there is something you don’t understand, there are plenty of tutorials to teach you what to do next. More advanced lessons are available online as well, so you may be able to create some utter masterpieces in this simple modeling software.<\/p>\n

The fact that it’s free and available to use in a browser is just the icing on the cake here. No additional software, and you can even remix already downloaded .STL files in it, too. If you’ve made something in the past that you want to refine, or want to add your own touches to something you’ve found online? This is the way to do it.<\/p>\n
